Los Angeles Dodgers : A year in review and outlook into the next

The Los Angeles Dodgers is one of the Major Leagues’ premier teams. The Dodgers used to be based in Brooklyn, and played its first game in the National League on the 19th of April, 1890. Back then, The Dodgers was affectionately known as the “Bridegrooms.” The name “Trolley Dodgers” got coined for the club because of the intricate network of trolley cars in the Brooklyn boroughs, and the name was eventually shortened to “Dodgers.” The baseball club’s National League debut proved to be a success, as the Brooklyn Bridegrooms won the championships with a record of 86-43.

The Dodgers stayed in Brooklyn until majority ownership of the club passed to real estate businessman Walter O’Malley. O’Malley moved the Dodgers to California in 1957, effectively changing the Brooklyn Dodgers to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The move was done because O’Malley wanted a more modern stadium for the club and that was simply not possible in New York during those times. Dodgers’ move to California changed Los Angeles baseball, making the Dodgers more accessible on the national level. The Dodgers’ new Stadium was finished in 1962, and was opened to the public on the 10th of April, 1962. The move to Los Angeles gave more of the Dodgers fans the opportunity to watch the club play, as its new stadium had a 56,000 seating capacity. The new stadium was christened with The Los Angeles Dodgers competing against long-time rivals, the Giants, selling Los Angeles Dodgers tickets even at standing room, and winning in a 6-5 game in front of 78,672 fans.

The Dodgers failed to secure the national pennant in 1962, when the San Francisco Giants managed to thwart them after tying in the National Finals, then beating the Dodgers in the tie-breaking play-offs. The Los Angeles baseball team made it up for its fans by winning the national pennant from 1963-65, and even winning the World Series in 1965 with a record of 97-65 against the Minnesota Twins.

The 70’s was also a great decade for the Los Angeles baseball team. If you had Los Angeles Tickets for a Dodgers baseball game during those times, you were sure to have spent your money wisely. During the 70’s, the Dodgers was able to secure three National League Pennants, three World Series appearances, and 910 victories in that decade. It was also in this time that the management of the team was passed from Hall of Famer Walter Aston to Tommy Lasorda. Tommy Lasorda’s managing career started with the Dodgers on the 29th of September, 1976, after Aston decided to retire after 23 years of being the Dodgers’ manager. Tommy Lasorda is known not only because he helped lead the team to winning the National League pennant back to back in 1977 and 1978, but also because of his distinctive personality. Tommy Lasorda is the complete opposite of the reserved Walter Aston. Lasorda was highly opinionated and is the team’s number one cheerleader. Tommy Lasorda made such an impression that it was hard to think of The Los Angels Dodgers without associating it to Tommy Lasorda from the late 70’s to the early 90’s. The 70’s was also the decade when the Dodgers achieved an outstanding achievement. In 1977, four members of the Los Angeles Dodgers team hit 30 or more home runs namely: Steve Garvey, who had 33 homeruns; Reggie Smith, who had 32; while Ron Cey and Dusty Baker both had 30 home runs.

The 80’s proved to be another great decade for the Los Angeles Dodgers, achieving victory in 825 games. The Los Angeles baseball club managed to win two World Championships, one in 1981 and the other in 1988. The Dodgers also held four National League division titles in 1981, 1983, 1985, and 1988. It was also in the 80’s when Dodgers fans experienced “Fernandomania,” when the rookie Mexican pitcher Fernando Valenzuela was forced to start for Opening Day of 1981 due to an injury of Jerry Reuss. The Mexican pitcher then proceeded to shut out their competitors, the Astros, in a 2-0 game. That year, Fernando Valenzuela became the first rookie to be awarded with the Cy Young Award honors, and helped the Dodgers secure the World Series against the New York Yankees. It was also in 1988 when the Dodgers beat an injury-riddled season and overcame the New York Mets, when everyone considered the Dodgers the underdogs. Despite this, the Los Angeles Dodgers managed to sweep the rest of the World Series after losing in the first game.
In 1990, The Dodgers celebrated their centennial anniversary in the National League. The Dodgers then proceeded to have two successful years, finishing second in 1990 and 1991. It was also in the 90’s when the Dodgers set another record, winning the National League rookie of the year award for five straight years. The Awardees are Eric Karros in 1992, Mike Piazza in 1993, Raul Mondessi in 1994, Hideo Nomo in 1995, and Todd Hollandsworth in 1996. It was also in the 90’s when ownership of the Dodgers passed from the O’Malley family, who owned the Dodgers for 48 years, to Rupert Murdoch, owner of the Fox Network and 20th Century Fox.

In 2000, the Dodgers set themselves to bring back the old glory the Dodgers used to enjoy. Jim Tracy, the former bench coach of the Dodgers, became the team’s manager in 2001. Under Tracy’s guidance, the Los Angeles Dodgers had a successful 2001 season, winning 86 games. In 2002, The Dodgers won 92 games. The 2003 season was another successful run as the Los Angeles Tickets for a Dodgers game proved worth your money. The Dodgers won 85 games. It was also in 2003 when Eric Gagne won the National League Cy Young award. No Dodger won that honor since 1988. In 2004, ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers was transferred to Boston real estate developer, Frank McCourt. It was also in 2004 when the Dodgers was victorious for 93 games and won the National League West Division title. The Dodgers hadn’t won the Division title since 1995.

Now, The Dodgers are off yet again that the fans’ trust and support is well placed. The Los Angeles Dodgers underwent a major overhaul from the roster to the manager. The current roster is filled with talented athletes, 20 of which are participating in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

The Los Angeles Dodgers is indeed a strong team as they posted a record of 88-74 and finished in a tie for first place in the National League Western division in the 2006 season. The season made the Dodgers fans grab some Dodgers tickets because of the much awaited games of the team. The 2006 roster was packed with players of great skills, hard work and determination. These players are also composed of a group of rookies such as Russell Martin, Andre Ethier, Takashi Saito and Jonathan Broxton. The previous season of the Los Angeles Dodgers was memorable. One of the remarkable moments happened on the 18th of September, as four consecutive home runs in the bottom of the ninth sent the game into extra innings, and Nomar Garciaparra’s walk-off blast turned an impending loss into an epic victory.

The Los Angeles Dodgers had a fruitful season. The success of the team was proven by the abundant sale of the Dodgers tickets. In fact, the following are the statistical leaders of the previous season:

    Batting
    Average: Andre Ethier, 308
    Doubles: J.D. Drew, 34
    Triples: Kenny Lofton, 12
Home runs: J.D. Drew, 20 and Nomar Garciaparra, 20
    Runs: Rafael Furcal, 113
    RBIs: J.D Drew, 100
    Stolen Bases: Rafael Furcal, 37

    Pitching
Wins: Brad Penny, 16 and Derek Lowe, 16
    Losses: Brad Penny, 9
    ERA (starter): Derek Lowe, 3.63
ERA (reliever): Takashi Saito, 2.07 (min. 10 appearances)
    Saves: Takashi Saito, 24

The next season of the Los Angeles Dodgers will surely be an exciting one. The fans will be excited once again and the Dodgers tickets will sell out. Jeff Kent was given an extension through 2007. If free agent Greg Maddux returns with Derek Lowe and Brad Penny, the Los Angeles Dodgers start out with a pretty solid top three, even if none is a true ace. The Los Angeles Dodgers might need an outstanding home run hitter for the next season, because the team spent most of the year last in the league in home runs. The supporters of the league and the Los Angeles Dodgers fans will be waiting for the performances of James Loney as well as Andy LaRoche. Both players showed remarkable skills. James Loney impressed the audience and co-players with the way he played in the month of September and October. On the other hand, Andy LaRoche will have to show that his shoulder is sound and that his overall approach has matured from the last Spring Training.

Los Angeles Dodgers has much to offer for the success of the next season. The Los Angeles Dodgers team will continue to be a strong and flexible team. The fans, who eagerly wait, are expecting for a great sports viewing experience while the team is training for a well-improved skills.
