Capital One Bowl History
Teams from two of college football's best conferences, the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference (SEC), meet each New Year's Day in the Capital One Bowl. Since its inception in 1947, Orlando's original bowl game has been thrilling fans for over half a century. The game was enhanced in 1993 when the Big Ten and SEC agreed to send top teams from each conference to the Bowl. Over the last several years national powers such as Auburn, Georgia, Michigan, Penn State, Purdue and Tennessee have appeared in the game. The strong teams and tradition help the Capital One Bowl annually draw a national television audience of millions on ABC. In the 2004 Capital One Bowl, the Georgia Bulldogs escaped with a 34-27 overtime victory over Purdue after the Boilermakers mounted a second half comeback to tie the score in the game's final minutes. In the first overtime contest in Capital One Bowl history, Georgia built an early 24-0 first-half lead, but Purdue scored 17 fourth-quarter points to push the game into extra time. Afther losing a fumble with 1:09 left in the game that allowed Purdue to kick the game-tying field goal, Kregg Lumpkin redeemed himself with a one-yard plunge in overtime to give Georgia the win.
