Cleveland Browns History

EARNEST BYNER (RB, Browns, Redskins and Colts 1984-97) missed only 13 of a possible 224 regular-season games during his 14-year career and retired with 8.261 rushing yards, 4,605 receiving yards and 72 touchdowns. "At the end of my career, it was hard to face that I couldn't play at a level acceptable to me," Byner said. "The transition was a reality check. Now I'm blessed to find balance in assisting others on their path." After six years as the Baltimore Ravens' director of player development, Byner became the Washington Redskins' running backs coach in 2004. He has been impressed with Washington's stable of backs, particularly Clinton Portis. "I worked with Ray Lewis and Ed Reed," Byner said, "and those guys cried after losses. (Portis) has the same type of spirit. He loves to win, and he's very confident and talented." In addition to teaching Xs and Os, Byner promotes the importance of education to all his players. "School has to come first:' he said, "because you never know %%hat can happen." Putting into practice %% hat he preaches, Byner graduated this past May from East Carolina University with a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science. He lives in Reisterstown, Md., \6th his wife and three children. The Byners also have an adult daughter.

RICKY FEACHER (WR, Patriots and Browns 1976-84) lives in Brookpark, Ohio, and works as a loan consultant for American Midwest Mortgage. For seven years after his retirement, Feacher served as a Browns' scout and the director of player relations-a natural transition for a player who reveled in his experiences as a Brown. "The 1980s was an exciting time in Cleveland," Feacher said. "We were winning a lot of close games in the last minute, and people were writing songs about `the Kardiac Kids.' It was all very inspirational. The support of the fans truly made them a 12th man on the field." Feacher played 122 games for the Browns. His average of 18.4 yards per catch ranks third all-time among Browns receivers. Feacher's teammates also voted him special teams captain in 1980 and 1981.

MICHAEL DEAN PERRY (DT-DE, Browns, Broncos and Chiefs 1988-97) lives with his wife and three daughters in Cornelius, N.C., where he is opening multiple Subway franchises. "I made the transition from playing to retirement easily," he said, "I enjoyed my time in the NFL, but all good things must come to an end:" A second-round draft pick in 1988, Perry was an immediate starter and finished the season on virtually every All-Rookie team. One of the league's quickest defensive tackles, Pen, consistently led the Browns in quarterback sacks and pressures, He was named All-NFI five times and received six Pro Bowl invitations. Perry retired with 61 career sacks.
