ROLF BENIRSCHKE (K, Chargers 1977-86) was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease midway through an NFL career that was capped by his 1997 induction into the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame. Following a series of surgeries, he dropped to 123 pounds. "I was ready to die." Benirschke said. But he battled back and retired as the Chargers' all-time scoring leader with 766 points. "Playing football is something I never planned to do," Benirschke said. "I didn't even start until my last year of high school and they talked me into playing in college. When I was drafted, it was a very novel idea." The second-tolast pick of the 1977 NFL draft, Benirschke went on to play in 121 games and was voted to the Pro Bowl in 1982. "Football gave purpose to my life," he said. "It gave me a platform from which I can make an impact on other people's lives." Benirschke is actively involved with the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America and has written his autobiography, "Alive and Kicking." He is married and has four children.
