NICK BUONICONTI (LB, Patriots and Dolphins, 1962-76; Inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame 2002) was the driving force behind the Dolphins' famed "No Name Defense" and the first member of the Dolphins' defense to be elected to the Hall of Fame. Buoniconti began his career with the Boston Patriots and was named to five AFL All Star games. He was traded to Miami at the end of the 1968 season and went on to play in three straight Super Bowls. He played in 183 NFL games and recorded 32 career interceptions. Buoniconti was named first team All AFL/AFC eight times and was voted to the AFL's All-Time team. Today, Buoniconti spends the majority of his time raising money for the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, the world's largest comprehensive spinal cord injury research center. Buoniconti became actively involved in the effort after his son, Marc, suffered a spinal cord injury in a 1985 college football game that left him paralyzed from the neck down. The project involves "200 scientists and technicians working in a 135.000-squarefoot research center;' Buoniconti said."Our operating budget is around $20 million a year. It takes an awful lot of time and energy to raise those kinds of funds." Nick is often accompanied by his son during fundraising efforts on behalf of the Miami Project. "Mark's quite an inspiration for me and a lot of people with spinal cord injuries: Buoniconti said."That's what our efforts all about keeping the hopes up until we find the ultimate cure. And we think that's going to happen in the not-too-distant future." Buoniconti and his wife, Lynn, has three children and lives in greater Miami.
