Minnesota Vikings Info.

The Minnesota Vikings are a professional American football team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Vikings are currently members of the North Division of the NFC in the NFL.

The pro football saga in the Twin Cities began in August 1959, when five Minnesota businessmen were awarded a team in the new American Football League. In January 1960, the ownership group made up of Bill Boyer, Ole Haugsrud, Bernie Ridder, H. P. Skoglund and Max Winter first forfeited its AFL membership and then was awarded the NFL's 14th franchise that began play in 1961. Since the late 1960s, the Vikings have been one of the most consistently successful teams in the NFL. The Vikings have won their division 16 times, and became the first team to appear in four Super Bowls

Perhaps no team in football history has ever had a more spectacular debut than the Minnesota Vikings in their first game ever on September 17, 1961. Rookie Fran Tarkenton made a once-in-a-generation debut when he came off the bench and threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth score to lead the Vikings to a 37-13 score against the Chicago Bears. In 1986, Tarkenton became the first Vikings player to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In May of 1981, the Vikings moved into their new facility in Eden Prairie that houses the team's offices, locker room and practice fields. The facility was named "Winter Park" after Max Winter, one of the Vikings founders and he also served as the team's president from 1965-87. The Vikings played their 1st game at the Metrodome in a preseason game against Seattle on Aug. 21, 1982 (they won 7-3).

Jerry Burns was named the 4th head coach in team history on January 7, 1986 and in his first season the Vikings went 9-7, their first winning record in 4 years.

In 1988, the Vikings posted a 8-7 record and pulled two huge upsets in the playoffs by beating the two teams with the best regular season records. Despite pulling off the major upsets the Vikings did not win the NFC championship that year.

On December 3, 1991, Jerry Burns announced his retirement and in 6 seasons as Head Coach, Burns compiled a career record of 52-43 (.547), also leading the Minnesota Vikings to 3 playoff appearances, including a division title and an NFC Championship Game.

On January 10, 1992, Dennis Green was named the 5th Head Coach in team history. In his 10 seasons as the coach of the Vikings, Green won 4 NFC Central division titles, had 8 playoff appearances, and 2 NFC Championship game appearances.

In 1998 the Minnesota Vikings had an amazing offense led by QB Randall Cunningham, who had his best NFL season ever, RB Robert Smith, veteran WR Cris Carter, and explosive rookie Randy Moss. The Vikings set an NFL record by scoring a total of 556 points, never scoring less than 24 in a game. The Vikings finished the season 15-1 and blew past the Arizona Cardinals 41-21 in the playoffs. The Vikings came into the Metrodome heavily favored for their NFC title showdown with the Atlanta Falcons but the Falcons defeated the Vikings in overtime.

In 2003 (under new head coach Mike Tice) the Vikings got off to a fast 6-0 start. However, the Vikings ended up going 3-7 the rest of the season, missing the playoffs because of a last second touchdown reception by the Arizona Cardinals' receiver Nate Poole.

In 2005 the Vikings started off shaky and things looked bleak until QB Daunte Culpepper injured his knee and Brad Johnson took his place. Ever since Johnson took over, he helped lead the Vikings to a six-game winning streak. The Vikings ended up with a 9-7 record and only 1 win away from the playoffs.
