Based in Cincinnati , Ohio , the Cincinnati Bengals are a professional American football team and are members of the North Division of the American Football Conference in the National Football League. Their first season, 1968, was as an American Football League franchise, but they soon joined the NFL in 1970 with the merger of the AFL and NFL.

The Bengals currently run their summer training camp at Georgetown College in Georgetown , Kentucky and they play their home games at Paul Brown Stadium.

In 1967, Cincinnati native Paul Brown was granted a franchise in the American Football League and because Cleveland already had a team, the Browns, Cincinnati was deemed the reasonable choice. For their initial season the Bengals played at Nippert Stadium and the team finished its first season with a 3-11 record. However, one bright spot of that season was running back Paul Robinson. Robinson rushed for 1,023 yards and he was named the AFL Rookie of the Year. In the 1970's the Bengals began to play at the Riverfront Stadium, where they stayed until they moved to Paul Brown Stadium in 2000.

Paul Brown coached the team for the first three seasons and accumulated 15 wins and 27 losses and one tie. One of Brown's draft strategies was to draft college players with above average intelligence. For example, punter/wide receiver Pat McInally attended Harvard and linebacker Reggie Williams attended Dartmouth College . Due to this policy, many former Bengals players were highly articulate and went on to have successful careers in commentary and broadcasting. In addition, Brown also had the ability for locating and recognizing pro football talent in unusual places.

The Bengals reached the playoffs three times during throughout the 1970's, but they where unable to win any of those postseason games. In 1975, the team had an 11-3 record, giving them what is, still to this day, the highest winning percentage, .786, in franchise history. It earned the Bengals a Wild Card spot in the playoffs, behind the Pittsburgh Steelers who went on to win the Super Bowl, and the Bengals lost to the Oakland Raiders, 31-28, in the wild card round. The Bengals would then go on to reach the Super Bowl twice during the 1980s, but were defeated both times by the San Francisco 49ers. After appearing in the playoffs in 1990, Paul Brown died and with his passing the Bengals' fortunes seemed to change for the worse. The team would post 14 uninterrupted non-winning seasons.

Their luck seemed to changed with the hiring of a new head coach, Marvin Lewis, in 2003. Drafted in 2003, star quarterback Carson Palmer brought the team to their first playoffs in over 12 years in 2004. The present home of the Bengals in the Paul Brown Stadium which was built for the 2000 season using private and public money. In tribute to his father, Mike Brown, the present owner, refused any corporate offers to have the stadium renamed in honor of his father. Recently, the Bengals have been struggling. The team attempted to improve from their 8-8 record in 2006 but they failed to do so in 2007, as they finished with a 7-9 record.

The 2008 season looks promising for the Bengals though. As long as the principal elements of their strong passing attack remain on the field, the Bengals are going to have a strong presence. Carson Palmer, Chad Johnson, and Houshmandzadeh are all elite talents. They will need Chris Henry can stay out of trouble with the law and return to the field as he's the best No. 3 receiver in the league. If the Cinncinnati Bengals can stay healthy and injury free, this may be a strong season for them. Now, there is the potential for things to fall apart again, but there is also a chance that the Bengals will find their rhythm at some point in the season and surprise some people. Don't count the Bengals out of a playoff spot just yet.
